Mercedes Benz Fashion Week – The week that was!

By Phoebes Garland

Another year, another Mercedes Benz Fashion Week (MBFWA) has rolled around again, with regular industry stalwarts making their milestones. A big start, with the merge of Premiere Trade Event, joining forces with MBFWA for the first time for the high-end component of the industry.

The IMG team who expertly put the event together like clockwork every year, as well as the many volunteers, rolled out another successful one this year at Carriageworks in Redfern. More of an industrial and arts chic vibe, it definitely had a more accessible feel about it while ensuring it felt spacious.

There was plenty of big milestones this year, with Perth based, Aurelia Costarella celebrating 30 years in business, as well with Camilla & Marc & Jayson Brunsdan also celebrating 10 year milestones. Fabulous to see the longevity of these business survive, through the good times and bad.

Sister and brother team, Camilla and Marc kicked off their show with a real wow factor. Inspired by the Russian Matroyoshka doll. There were strong textures , with jacquared and lace, silks, jackets embellished and metallic. Tailoring and elegance were highlighted in this collection

Also on Day 1, Aurelio Costeralla’s collection wowed crowds and media and was a retrospect based on his 30 years in the fashion industry and paying homage to his recurring themes in past collections. A combination of Ready to wear and Couture pieces it was a sublime look into this very talented designers abilities. The esteemed designer dedicated his collection to his late father who died at the beginning of the year.

Phoenix Keating SS14 `HUMANOID’ MBFWA

‘HUMANOID’ is the s/s 2013 fashion week debut collection of designer Phoenix Keating, who has created an array of ready to wear pieces and highly memorable couture designs that take us on a journey to another planet. More than just a fashion show, guests were treated to 19 incredibly unique works of art as part of Phoenix Keating’s fashion week installation.

From the moment the doors opened to ‘The box’ inside Carriage works, the audience were captivated by the arrangement of models perfectly positioned in the centre of the room, creating instant curiosity around the show that was quickly called “one that cannot be missed”.

But did it live up all the hype?

Just ask one of the 300+ guests who did not want to leave the show in hopes of getting one last glimpse of any one of Phoenix Keating’s exquisite artworks.

The collection itself showcased a variety of fabrics and colours that brought life to the installation. Metallic silver, fringing and sleek structured designs were combined beautifully by designer Phoenix Keating and worked well as the backbone of the collection.

Guests were in a trance as each model broke their statue stance and paced the stage, showing the light of air glide of his dresses, the flattering comfort of tailored, high-waisted pants and the easy movement in a tight pencil skirt.

The intricate story behind the collection was executed with ease on stage as your eyes locked in on a trim of detail that visually took you back to the old-west, to see the concept through the designer’s eyes.

With a following that already spreads internationally, this memorable show and its response just proved that Phoenix Keating truly sets himself apart from the other designers, he has reiterated that he is a talented, inspiring young designer, and is certainly one to watch. Serpent & the Swan SS13/14 Insecta Botanica

Australian label Serpent & the Swan unveiled their much anticipated Spring Summer 13/14 collection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia 2013.

Designed by sisters Hayley & Lauri Smith the Serpent & the Swan label is inspired by a shared childhood love of the animal kingdom and a somewhat dark and morbid fascination with the anatomy of creatures and their mystical incarnations.

Following this theme, Serpent & the Swan’s Spring/ Summer 2013/14 Collection Insecta Botanica explores the idea of growth and the inherent relationship between plant and human life cycles.

The Box was transformed into a botanical museum, with models exhibited partially in display cases encased with Serpent & the Swan jewellery, coppered bones, agate crystal and plant samples, to an ominous score of forest and insect noises.

The collection features a self-designed ‘Botanica’ print inspired by 18th Century botanical plates, insect dissection and anatomical drawings of teeth amongst a muted colour palette of lavender leathers, wheat hues, dirty mint, washed out stripes and brilliantly severe black.

Leather harnesses over soft dresses, relaxed t-shirts and shirts with sheer wide trousers and leather bras and briefs aim to imitate the juxtaposition of hard and soft aspects found in nature along with embroidered organza, loose mesh knits, raw linen and fluid silk dresses.

Insecta Botanica is a collection of uniquely beautiful and androgynous pieces that stay true to the brooding aesthetic of the label, all adorned with the unique, handcrafted, gold and brass trimmings which have become a hallmark of for Serpent & the Swan, this season taking the forms of teeth and skull buttons, horse head zippers and bone details.

Coco Ribbon on Bohemian Luxe

Alison Chow founded the Coco Ribbon boutique in London’s Notting Hill, a region which she says embodied the `Bohemian Luxe’ aesthetic of the brand.

And it has set the stage ever since with her understated luxe look coveted by the well-travelled `Gypset crowd’ across the globe.

“It’s about an understated but luxe aesthetic which isn’t too contrived and which will always resonate with ethos of Coco Ribbon,” she said.

Now Coco Ribbon is a highly successful online store. We chat to Alison at Premiere Trade Event co-located with Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia to chat further on her launch into e-commerce, where she sources inspiration and being a Sydney girl at heart.

How was the merge from bricks-and-mortar to e-commerce? How has it changed the Coco Ribbon concept?

I believe it’s a challenge for all brands to fully express what they are about through an online store as opposed to bricks-and-mortar.
At our boutique the merchandising, ambience, scents, music and service were all key to establishing the Coco Ribbon brand and not all those variables are possible to communicate via the internet. However the emergence of multi-media channels such as instagram, pinterest and facebook have created new avenues in which brands, including Coco Ribbon, can tell their story.

Tell us about the collections that feature on Coco Ribbon website? Where do you source your inspiration?

Mostly I am inspired by the beauty in nature and because of my Eurasian heritage I am often drawn to intricate and detailed prints such as Chinoiserie.

Living in both Asia and Europe over the last decade fuelled further my interest in and passion for opulent prints and details in fabrics and embellishments.

You are originally a Sydney gal but your life has taken you all over the world from Hong Kong to New York and London. Can you share some of your favourite sourcing locations? Why?

I find David Tang’s China Club in Hong Kong a feast for the eyes with it’s Asian interiors and art mixed with European influences. I never go to Paris without paying a visit to the Clignancourt markets where you can find everything from antique jewellery, furniture, embroided fabrics and shawls as well as unique artisan artefacts.

In New York I always go to ABC Store and take in their spectacular merchandising and products from gifts, jewellery, lamps and homewares sourced from all over the world.

You are bringing the Coco Ribbon brand to Premiere trade event at MBFWA, what can visitors expect to see from your stand?

This season you’ll find silk harem pants, billowing blouses and our best-selling ‘wear-five-ways’ dress in bespoke prints from a stain-glass-window paisley, coral and turquoise parrot fish to a flamboyant navy and pink floral.
Signature capes and cropped jackets with sequin detail also feature alongside beautiful block coloured peplum tops, dresses and highly embellished hero piece blouses.

What are some of your personal favourite pieces online right now?

The “Eden” Playsuit where the print has tiny apples dotted among the flowers, the Aqua Snakeskin ‘wear-five-ways’ floor length dress and the Big Bang Cape in feather “Phoenix”.

What’s in store for the future – where do you see the brand heading?

For now I’m enjoying gaining a presence in Australia and will see how my label evolves with the market here. I promised myself I’d keep things simple… however one project that I couldn’t resist starting is a little girls range, launching just in time for my daughters second birthday.

It’ll share the same ethos as our womenswear range – beautiful prints, luxe fabrics and some butterfly sequin embellished pieces for a mini-boho-luxe look. I think if you can’t stop thinking about something and it comes to you without feeling like hard work then you’ve got to do it.
