They’ve always made us look good on the outside, but now fashion brands are in the business of stitching integrity into your sleeves too.
Fashion is suddenly ditching its extravagant tag towards an ethical one, raising awareness of how our garments are made, where and by whom so you can look good and feel it too.
Local label 3Fish is working towards a greener future one dress at a time with their underlying mantra of `ethical, earth friendly and fair’.
Founders, parents and entrepreneurs, Marty and Natalie Dillon hatched the idea to create 3Fish after reading popular Dr. Seuss children’s classic, `Hop on Pop’ to their three children one night and laughing at the line `3fish in a tree, how can that be?!’.
“It’s the absurdity of it, the impossibility of it, and the audacity of it,” says Natalie.
“We now have three rapidly growing, young children, and by honouring our children as a big part of our inspiration we felt we could reflect that in our work and do something very positive for the generations to come.
“Also fish have such lovely symbolism with new life, creation, transformation, renewal, and empowerment (“…teach a man to fish and you’ll feed him for a lifetime”), which sits well with our commitment to Fairtrade, Organics, and taking responsibility for every inch of our footprint.”
Their sustainable efforts were recently awarded with the United Nations World Environment Day Awards for Sustainability Leadership for SME’s (companies who employ less than 500 employees) and the Victorian Premier’s Sustainability Award for Small Business (under 100 employees).
In the lead up to their showing at Premiere – boutique trade show for exclusive labels next month, we asked founder, Natalie Dillon how these three words integrate into the 3Fish product and to explain the fair trade process from design, production and manufacture.

Hand made with love…
July 21, 2011
“Creativity I think is the light of humanity – if there’s no creativity there’s no life.” – Chie Mihara.
In her rustic Spanish studio, Chie Mihara hand designs her self-titled shoe label with the traditional techniques of an old school cobbler.
Drawing on her background in scultpure, the creative loves to craft her shoes in a similar process by placing pieces of leather and frills or accessories onto and around her own foot, experimenting with new shapes, styles and colour-ways.
“I never thought about shoes in my life and since then I am so addicted – I’m not a shoe addict but I really enjoy doing shoes,” she says.
Mihara seeks inspiration from her book collection on pattern making, packaging design and illustration, that often has nothing to do with shoes but might provide her with interesting patterns of flowers or colour combinations that can inspire the next range.
“I like to cut out the small shape of a shoe out, then place that around the magazine, and sometimes you find the colour combination or shapes that is really interesting within that frame of the little shoe,” she says.
