The four P’s for exhibiting at a trade fair: Position, Price, Presentation and Product…

Luxe Deluxe range at Premiere boutique trade event for exclusive brands, Sydney

It’s no secret that exhibiting at a trade fair can be very beneficial for launching a brand into the market and putting your label in front of a large number of retailers. But there are some fundamental things you need to do to ensure you are getting your money’s worth. Experienced agent Phoebe Garland, co-founder of Garland & Garland Fashions, offers her tips for standing out at a trade event.

Understanding the type of buyer who is attending is critical. Also ensuring your product is priced to suit this buyer and that your product is commercial with modern design, yet has a point of difference is mandatory to good sales.

Do your research before you go, visit the trade show a season before exhibiting and really have a look at the exhibitors who are really busy, and find out why they are doing the business. Have a good look at what’s already exhibiting and ensure you are not duplicating. Find out as much about your competitors to ensure you have an edge when you exhibit.

It will also help you find where the volume of sales are heading and at which price points. Getting feedback from buyers as to what is missing in the market is very valuable and you may be able to fill that void in your ranges. Spending the money on a decent stand with strong signage and good positioning is well worth the money and it makes all the difference.

The Premiere boutique trade event was recently held in the grand setting of the Royal Hall of Industries, Sydney and we couldn’t help but notice the incredible array of accessories from footwear to unique knotted necklaces and crystal cuffs.

The BlogPost was launched for the first time and our network of bloggers snapped their favourite pieces around the venue. We especially loved the floral Joe’s Jeans that caught the eye of Margaret at Shine By Three; or the handmade shoes from Habbot lensed by Nicole of Confidant Liar. Christie of Dark Blue Stripes was also inspired by the printed and coloured denim on show.

Here are some of the accessories across the show floor through the eye of the Premiere Fashion Blog lens.

Codie Young for Rebecca Taylor SS12…

Images via Viviens Model Management

Style.com said her recent NYFW Fall 12 runway show stepped away from the signature girly, floral frocks we’ve all come to know and love from Rebecca Taylor and towards a moodier sensibility.

“Our girl for fall has a bit of a darker heart, she is a little bit edgier but still feminine,” she said. “The Fall collection is very personal to me and the message I wanted to convey is modern femininity. It’ s been really well received among the buyers and press.”

And it’s easy to see why. Models took to the catwalks with a nonchalant swagger, layered in wintry assortments including velvet pants that were more luxe and lightweight than their heavy and dowdy sister of the 1980s, which paired with soft and sheer dresses delivered a strong tomboy appeal, while still remaining firmly feminine.

Rebecca Taylor has become a huge success internationally and her latest collection was well received at the recent Premiere Boutique Trade Event, Sydney. We caught up with the designer to discuss how she tapped into her darker side for her edgier Fall collection; why she chooses NYFW as a platform to showcase her line; and why Australian model Codie Young was a perfect fit as the face of her latest campaign.

You mentioned the Rebecca Taylor girl `has a slightly darker heart’ this season – how so? And how did this reflect on the collection?

I think in the rich color palette, the textures, and just the overall vibe of the collection.

You are a regular at NYFW, why do you choose this forum to showcase your work each season?

There is so much excitement and buzz surrounding NY Fashion week- it’s the best way to advertise your new collection.

What are some of the textures you played with this season and why? There was some beautiful velvet and leather in there.

Yes, lots of supple leathers, soft velvets, we also showed some tweeds jackets, silk dresses, Lace tops, chiffon pants. I loved playing with the textures and layers for this collection.

There was a lot of play with layering, with cozy coats and raglan sweaters over sheer tops and leggings and leather shorts or floaty dresses, adding a tomboy edge to the feminine shapes – is this a reflection of your personal style?

Yes, this collection does reflect my personal style quite a bit.

You cast Australian models on the rise, Codie Young and Dempsey Stewart in your show – why did you choose these girls? How did they suit the aesthetic of this collection? How important is the casting process for your NYFW show?

The casting process is so difficult, there are so many beautiful girls we see. I loved Codie and Dempsey, they are both so beautiful and cool.

Making the Move – What to consider when taking your retail store online

Online retail sales are climbing and more retailers are making the move to digital. Switched on Media Director, Andy Jamieson touched on this topic at Premiere boutique trade event Business Seminar series today.

With $15.9 billion spent online for 2012 (up 64% on the year before) and $30 billion expected by 2016 there is little doubt that retailers need to have a presence in the e-commerce environment – now. And it’s not just about having a website either, to compete in the global market, business’ need to be tuned into the social media networks too. But the looming question is, how do we juggle all of these online channels with our offline commitments in-store?

Premiere Fashion Blog took five with Andy post-seminar to ask what does it mean to have a `digital presence’; how do we compete with offshore online giants ASOS and Topshop, and can we?; and the crucial role of data analysis to online success.

BACKSTAGE PASS to Alex Perry LMFF runway 2012…

Backstage shot by Liz McLeish Photography (please credit if you re-post)

Premiere Fashion Blog was privileged to be invited backstage to shoot these exclusive images of the Alex Perry runway showcase at L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival last night. The king of corsets was in his finest glory flanked by the superstars of Australian modelling, including Ruby Jean Wilson who flew in especially to open and close the show.

The collection was signature AP red carpet glamour but this time the term couture certainly applied. Detailed embroidery, delicate applique flowers and intricate beading were sewn into sheer gauze dresses worn with boned corsetry that fitted the girls immaculately to define and shape the traditional female silhouette.

It was a stunning showcase. We were also more than a little obsessed with the winged smokey eye that really accentuated the model’s already striking features.
